Spelling & meaning

“Jhovas” usually means Jehovah’s Witnesses

If you typed jhovas, you almost certainly meant Jehovah’s — as in Jehovah’s Witnesses. Their official website is jw.org. This page explains the name, and what to do if the reason you searched is that they keep knocking on your door.

Where the misspelling comes from

“Jehovah” is a Latinised rendering of the Hebrew name of God, and it is awkward to type quickly: the silent H, the vowel run and the possessive apostrophe all invite slips. “Jhovas”, “jehovas”, “jhova” and “jhovas witness” are among the most common results, and search engines usually still work out what was meant. If you were looking for the organization itself, its publications or a local meeting, jw.org is the place to go.

Who Jehovah’s Witnesses are

Jehovah’s Witnesses are a Christian denomination with congregations in most countries, meeting in buildings called Kingdom Halls. Their best-known practice is door-to-door ministry: members, known as publishers, are assigned a territory and call on the households in it. Because territories are worked repeatedly, the same address tends to be visited again over months and years — which is why people who would rather not be called on keep searching for a way to be taken off the round.

If you searched because of visits to your home

You do not have to answer the door, argue, or explain yourself. Each congregation keeps an internal “Do Not Call” record of addresses publishers are instructed to skip. What gets you onto it reliably is a written request to the right congregation. In Europe, Articles 17 and 21 of the GDPR give you the right to object to your address being processed this way and to ask for your data to be erased. In the United States and Canada, privacy and no-soliciting rules serve the same purpose.

That is the one thing this site does: it prepares that letter for you, addressed to the congregation nearest the home you want left alone. You can download it free and post it yourself, or we can print and post it for $9.99 — see exactly how that works.
